The M1 MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini are all impressive. But is Apple Silicon really going to end up being viable long term? Today we talk about a respectable Ryzen 4000 APU to demonstrate just how far ahead Apple may be...

Apple announced Apple Silicon and a transition to ARM from x86 earlier this year after years of rumors and speculation. The M1 SoC released in the M1 Mac mini, M1 MacBook Pro, and M1 MacBook Air is impressive. The chip is insanely efficient and has rather excellent performance-objectively-not just for a low-TDP chip. But how does it compare to something like a Ryzen 4750G APU. Or what about a top-of-the-line laptop CPU like the 5900HX? We benchmark both machines and demonstrate how Apple Silicon's power efficiency just can't be matched and how that might affect the high-performance of an upcoming M2 or M1X later this year.

Whoops! Every once in a while we make a mistake. The chart at 2:03 has the Mac with a score of 10173. It actually got 7793. I knew of this scoring disparity when I wrote the script as I used the term “manhandled,” but it seems we goofed in the edit by making the results appear closer than they were. All the other numbers however have been verified as correct. Apologies for the error!

As a former systems manager, I know that BALANCE counts for a lot, when designing any system. What Apple can do, because they control everything in their world, now, is to balance the performance of their components, and integrate them with the operating system seamlessly. As new applications are built and old ones rebuilt for the ARM-based Apple Silicon, they will become more and more efficient. This is already apparent with Apple's own Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro. There's a tendency to run horse races when comparing computers. In the real world, most of the benchmarks are just mildly informative. What counts is daily productivity and "livability" with the machine. Once you adapt to an Apple ecosystem, it becomes obvious why they are so successful at sucking people into their orbit. They aren't perfect - lack of ports is a MAJOR annoyance, since dealing with docks, hubs, and dongles is a royal PITA, and lack of repairability and upgradeability is also hard to absorb. But they do answer a lot of the annoyances of WinTel and AMDWin environments. I can't wait to see what the next two generations of M SOCs can do.

As someone that has an M1 MacBook Pro, I wouldn’t get one depending on what type of work you intend to do and how proficient you are in troubleshooting. Is it blazing fast? Definitely. Does it have trouble running some applications and can it be a total pain in the ass sometimes? Also definitely. For anyone looking at the M1, I’d suggest waiting for a little bit until developers adjust and more apps run natively/more smoothly on the chip. Just my 2 cents

I love AMD, but their APUs don't have half the extras that Apple's M1 has. Apple's GPU doesn't do the heavy lifting for most Video workloads. They have dedicated codecs which are better than most systems. The GPU in the Ryzen APUs is actually weaker than the M1's GPU, but not by that much. AI workloads on the M1 can use a dedicated AI engine while the APU just going to use the 7 CU GPU, which is weaker than a budget dedicated GPU such as a rx550. The strength of the M1 is they have custom accelerators. It's a bit of smoke and mirrors, it's not the "cpu" that makes the M1 so great. It's the heterogeneous compute nature of the M1 that makes it magic. The cpu hands off many workload without tying up the GPU or CPU.

Im a video producer and photo editor and I can honestly say I have zero regrets. Got off to a wee bit of a shaky start due to two of my NAS not being compatible and a couple of programs, but literally everything has fixed itself with the latest update for me, so I moved my MacPro on after knowing its now a stable workhorse.

sorry, no. You can stick a cell phone motherboard and optimize it, it still not equivalent to a computer. I have a mac mini m1 computer, and it runs good. That being said, my pc computer blows it out of the water. You can run all the cinebench tests you want, real world speed is what it is, and without a high end gpu, it doesn't cut the leather the right way. That and the issues with the m1 swap space, cpu, and hard drive causing thermal and slow down issues, bluetooth, mouse, and external drives. Apple needs to work harder to sell their "porches" to the world for the price they are asking. I like the MacOS, just don't care for their hardware, and the lack of upgrading options on almost all their machines except for the most expensive ones out there.

It's a shame the author of this video didn't actually talk about the benefits of the ryzen APU system vs the M1. It was written to be biased to apple. More RAM, upgradable RAM, replaceable SSD, ability to add high speed networking, etc. It's another m1 is glorious because i can make youtube videos on it review. The GPU performance of the m1 is impressive. Too bad apple gave up on gamers.

8:10 you cant but apple did. m1 is not a miracle. it is just standard arm infastructure with some x86 accelerators. apple products are like old databanks. databanks are faster, more reliable and cheaper from every laptop. but they only do few things. if you need more features you have to pay more. apple soldering data storage chips, gluing battery, putting defects on their products. they dont support international computer standards. their only goal is making people pay more. no matter how. they can put less ports to devices to make you buy dongles. but they don't want you buy any dongle. so they ban every other dongle that not certified by apple. when amd or intel creates new product that help whole computer industry, but when apple create a product it only helps apple and his few minions. any company can make a product does few things best and ban the others. but those companies can't survive except apple. they managed to keep customers while they do everything against them.

Have an M1 MBA - loaded, but sold it. Got the base Mac Mini M1 to use with my 1440P 27" monitor. It's actually bliss - I just took my 600W 9700K desktop off my desk, and stuck the M1 Mini there which is like 5% the volume. At first blush, the M1 feels as fast and powerful at everyday tasks, but what blows me away is I'm playing some of my beloved strategy games at 1440P with literally NO fan noise whatsoever. Civ VI runs very well at 1440P/Medium and runs so quiet you can hear pin drops in the room. I'm pretty excited about the next gen Mac Mini - sure hope they release an M1X model. I'm kinda over bug and huge computing devices.

Looking great Quinn! I mean, as die-hard PC as I am, I still can appreciate the sheer efficiency and engineering going on with the M1. What do you think would be or could be a fair PC-land response? Even if AMD, Intel, or someone else threw on tons of cache for the equivalent performance, obviously they'd still push out more heat. Not an issue for us desktop users but paramount for longevity in laptops being operable. It'll be an exciting few next years for sure! Even if it is tempting to go Mac, there is just way too much software (games, work, and professional programs) that only run in Windows that I use at a HEDT desktop level.

i knew that when apple would port these powerhouse Arm silicon made by them on iphones and Ipad to the mac universe , this would be a revolution in performance , batterie life .... it's must be hard for intel or AMD to be smashed to the ground with a little 5mm chip who gets on the top 5 most powerful Soc .... but i guess it is only a start cos they is much room for improvements , imagine an imac or mac pro with many M2 chips... this would be nuts...

In the US the Mac Mini has a fine price... But in the EU we pay €799.10 for it (YES Apple wants that 10 cents too) But that Ryzen PC is actually cheaper vs US? Yeah.... So in other words it depends where you live which one makes more sense.

i have been a mac detractor for years. not that I think Apple builds bad products but because they lock you into their ecosystem which goes against my "religious" beliefs and that for years, the performance you got from apple products was downright inferior to comparatively priced PCs. Be it in the desktop market (where it still holds true) as well as the laptop market where Apple's poor cooling solutions kneecaped the performance of their hardware massively. However, if I was looking to buy a laptop to do work in today, it would be the Macbook Air. No question about it. Intel latest laptop did close the gap dramatically but for a more expensive price point, you are getting similar performance (from the same cpu as an XPX 13) at the cost of thermals and that awesome (and they are awesome) retina screens (not to mention the touchpad). I am not convinced that ARM is the future. I am convinced that ARM is part of the future and I wouldn't be surprised if the desktop market in the future doesn't have hybrid x86-ARM chips in it. Apple and AMD are giving Intel a run for their money and this will definitely force them to pull their finger out and actually improve their products which they haven't had to do really since Sandy Bridge. the M1 chip is probably the biggest advance in computer hardware in 15 years.

People are comparing these new m1 to everything else out there and that’s just stupid. I’m exited and comparing it to previous generations of laptops and Mac mini not other pc or laptops. Compared to the dual core or even quad core laptops from Apples intel the performance is a HUGE leap. That’s where at least MY excitement comes from that with 700 dollar Mac mini and Final Cut Pro you can edit pretty much anything.... which you CANNOT with a 700 dollar windows laptop you can kinda sorta ... but no

Of course there is the other problem of Apple essentially bought exclusivity to the newest TSMC process so I would love to see AMD chips on the same process and see how it compares tech for tech. There may also be some efficiency benefit from memory on package design, but this also limits things like upgrades and maximum memory bank size due to too big a memory pool needs more space thus speeds fall due to the physics of how quick the data can be moved. Neat chip but I cannot use it due to lock in (or in my case out). I need it to boot to Linux and ideally not as swappy as the M1... would also need MUCH more than 16GB ram not because my laptop needs a TON of speed but running things like Android emulators and virtual machines even if low load requires a ton of space... a SHARED 16GB just won't cut it considering some of that goes to the GPU which on my machines is up to 8GB on my PC and probably between 2 and 8GB on my laptop (I don't really need that much but 2-4GB is a sizable chunk of 16GB when things are tight). Frankly if my VMs were Linux I would be ok but occasionally I need my Windows 10 VM and the two most memory intensive operating systems I have used so far are Mac OS X (and successors) and Windows. What I'm waiting for is one by Quallcomm in a few years since they bought Apples CPU guy so they're already catching up after the whole Apple made everyone start from scratch to jump to 64bit ARM before they were planning to thing... and now they also have the secret sauce. Quallcomm wont benefit right away though because there is the whole CPUs take a while to put through the pipeline but maybe in 3 years Quallcomm will go from reasonably fast to HOLY CRAP overnight. This in a small PC or laptop that does not have the same restrictions that keep me from running Linux would be amazing since I want to develop on and for ARM Linux which has been around since before the Raspberry Pi 1 but until now ARM computers were a little anemic. I wanted so badly to buy an M1 Mac and dualboot just because there are no high end ARM chips right now but alas Apple wont allow that. Also I cannot in good faith buy from them because as a developer they are not kind and after the Hey email app incident where they BLOCKED A SECURITY UPDATE for a reason that is only really able to be represented as "Thou shalt use OUR API and ONLY the API WE ALLOW not your own!"... yeah I was already unhappy with them but that was the final straw and until ALL the execs that made that decision are gone I CANNOT support them. Companies are people to when they're gone the Apple I despise will cease to exist and I can once again evaluate only on the performance not on a moral and ethical ground.

@Archie Gee doubtful and hopefully that isn’t the case. Ram isn’t one size fits all, this demonstration of what it can be and do I cool, but it is apples chip, apples software, specific case coded compatibility layer. It’s basically the best case scenario, imagine getting a third party device and it’s not nearly as fast because the layer wasn’t shared, even native apps across manufacturers and developers vary wildly. It has a use, but likely not in the world of demanding pc games, which is a dominant corner of the market.
